Fukui Takase, Choreographer – Fukiko is an internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer, renowned for her innovative artistry and cross-cultural collaborations. Born in New York and raised in Japan, she was trained by esteemed dance artists Katsuko Orita and her mother Takako Takase. Fukiko’s artistic journey includes receiving the prestigious Cultural Affairs Fellowship from the Japanese government, followed by advanced studies at Codarts Rotterdam Dance Academy and London Contemporary Dance School.
Her career features collaborations with leading companies such as the Henri Oguike Dance Company, Company Wayne McGregor, and the Akram Khan Company. Notable works include the groundbreaking “1001,” created in collaboration with composer Dustin O’Halloran, which premiered in Minneapolis, and “Don Juan Techno Club,” in collaboration with Daniel Brandt and Frieder Nagel that premiered in Nuremberg.
Fukiko’s versatility extends to the screen, with a notable appearance in Thom Yorke’s Atoms for Peace music video “Ingenue,” as well as high-profile commercials for UNIQLO, Toyota, and Diner’s Club. As a choreographer, she has crafted a visually stunning music video for Hikaru Utada with whom she has toured Japan for her 20th anniversary concert, performing before an audience of approximately 140,000 people which is available to watch on Netflix. Her recent Music video “Spiritus Naturae Aeternus” by Dustin O’Halloran is also now featured on Nowness.
In 2022, Fukiko was appointed Honourable Professor at Shikoku University, where she choreographed “UMITOKAMI,” a work that melds traditional Japanese instruments with Joruri puppet theatre, performed in 2022 and 2023.
With a passion for nurturing talent, Fukiko is dedicated to her roles as a performer, choreographer, and teacher. She actively collaborates with multidisciplinary artists worldwide, with a particular focus on bridging the dynamic dance scenes of the UK and Japan. Her highly anticipated work “1001” is set to embark on a US tour in 2025, further establishing her as a leading voice in contemporary dance
